The Five Stages of Group Development
Over the last week of class, we have been looking at the five stages of group development, by looking at these stages, examples of these stages, and learning/ trying improv. In my blog post today, I want to focus on the importance of these five stages. One of the examples that we looked at was the movie, Remember the Titans. Attached is another youtube video explaining all the steps of group development. Click here to watch.
I am going to go through all stages of the group dynamics and explain what each stage accomplishes, and how to identify what stage a group is in.
The first stage of the development is forming. This is where people establish meeting each other, and aren't focused on the basis of their goals yet. They are still getting to know each other and seeing how their personalities work together.
The second stage of development is storming. This is when the roles really come into place and people speak their opinions about the way they want things done, and coming up with a plan to get the job done.
Norming is the third stage of development. This is when everyone is working together and helping better the group by helping each other. Helping to improve ideas, work together and get the majority of the work done.
Most groups don't get into the fourth stage which is performing. This is when you can independently get the job done, and the work is divided by the people in the groups into specific groups.
The fifth stage is adjourning. This is important because you can analyze what did and didn't go well, have better groups and tasks for everyone next time and create a more accomplished goal.

Hi! I loved how you used the example that was used in class because it gave a better understanding as to how they correlate. Remember the Titans is a classic movie that every one loves and to be learning the 5 stages of Group Development in class, its amazing how one is able to see these stages used in both everyday life and film. For example, my post was written on my brothers lacrosse team which is similar to the field of sports, relating to Remember the Titans. Either it is real life or in the film, its awesome to see the stages and how they all come together to make outstanding results. Great post!
